Carabobo: Governor attacked a newspaper via Twitter

On July 23, 2013, Francisco Ameliach, governor of Carabobo state (which is located towards the center-north of the country) questioned the coverage of news by private newspaper Notitarde on the crisis at the main hospital in the region, located in Valencia.

In the first page of the printed edition of Tuesday July 23, Notitarde showed a photograph of three men carrying a sick person on a stretcher, in a street near the Ciudad Hospitalaria Enrique Tejera (CHET) hospital complex, as the care center is called. The text explained that in order to have some studies made, the patients had to be taken to care centers managed by private entities in the street across the CHET.

The story bothered governor Ameliach (@AmeliachPSUV) -backed by the official political party Partido Socialista Unido de Venezuela- who sent three tweets criticizing the printed media and describing them as a political party.

“Notitarde is waging a systematic campaign against the advances accomplished at the CHET. It does not publish any of the positive accomplishments. Good shall prevail!” he commented (https://twitter.com/AmeliachPSUV/status/359655646578216960).

He added “There is still much to do at the CHET but we have advanced. Notitarde is acting as a political party, with evil intentions” (https://twitter.com/AmeliachPSUV/status/359656474793869312).

“Several journalists of Notitarde have visited the CHET and have taken photos of the refurbished areas but have not published a single one” (https://twitter.com/AmeliachPSUV/status/359658211390918656).

Notitarde did not respond in its issue of the following day to these statements, which could be considered intimidatory to the work of the journalists. It also represents an abusive use of the state´s power since it is used to berate a media for informing on affairs of public interest.

Label: intimidation, abusive use of the state´s power
