Durante el mes de junio de 2013, funcionarios del Ministerio de Salud han restringido el acceso a la información oficial sobre el virus H1N1 a los periodistas que laboran en medios de comunicación privados en la ciudad de Acarigua, estado Portuguesa, en centrooccidente del país. Las autoridades sanitarias dan a conocer los casos registrados y el seguimiento de la enfermedad sólo a través de boletines institucionales, negándose a declarar directamente a los reporteros independientes.
De acuerdo a la información aportada a IPYS Venezuela por la reportera Mariángel Moro Colmenárez, quien cubre la fuente de sucesos en Última Hora, diario local privado con sede en Acarigua, los funcionarios del Ministerio de Salud no atienden llamadas ni facilitan entrevistas para corroborar los datos recabados, por ello se difunden registros de manera extraoficial, que luego suelen ser desmentidos por las autoridades sin ahondar en detalles.
Esta situación se presenta ante un brote de virus AH1N1 en el país que ha provocado la infección y la muerte de varias personas.
Por su parte, el Comité Directivo del Círculo de Periodismo Científico de Venezuela solicitó a las autoridades públicas un tratamiento transparente, oportuno, veraz y sin censura ante la anunciada restricción de datos acerca de la epidemia de influenza AH1N1 que afecta actualmente al país.

Portuguesa: Access to official information on H1N1 epidemic restricted
In the course of June 2013, health ministry officials have restricted the access to official information on the H1N1 flu to journalists working in private communication media in the city of Acarigua, Portuguesa state, to the central-west of the country. The health authorities divulge the registered cases and follow-up to the disease only through institutional bulletins, refusing to offer direct statements to independent reporters.
Based on information furnished to IPYS Venezuela by reporter Mariángel Moro Colmenárez, who covers the events source at Última Hora, a private local newspaper based in Acarigua, the health ministry officials are not taking calls nor are they offering interviews to corroborate the data collected, so off-the-record figures are being aired which are later denied by the authorities without getting into many details.
This situation arose as a result of the current AH1N1 flu bout in the nation which has provoked the infection and death of several persons.
In turn, the directors´ committee of the Circle of Scientific Journalism of Venezuela requested that the public authorities offer transparent, timely, truthful and uncensored information to the announced restriction of data on the AH1N1influenza epidemic currently scourging the nation.
