El 3 de abril de 2013, el equipo reporteril de la Agencia Venezolana de Noticias (AVN), medio informativo digital del Estado -conformado por Orlando Rangel, reportero; y Zurimar Campos, reportera gráfica- fue agredido físicamente por funcionarios de seguridad del comando de campaña Simón Bolívar, que respalda a Henrique Capriles Randski, candidato para las elecciones presidenciales del próximo 14 de abril. El hecho ocurrió durante un acto del aspirante presidencial, en Caracas, Distrito Capital.
Orlando Rangel relató a IPYS Venezuela que al llegar al lugar donde se realizaría la actividad de Capriles, un funcionario del equipo de prensa del comando de campaña le informó que no podía ingresar a cubrir la actividad porque no había sido convocado. Rangel pudo observar que a los demás periodistas de otros medios públicos también le prohibieron el acceso, mientras que sí permitieron ingresar a equipos de medios privados e internacionales.
El reportero comentó que a pesar de la negativa, ellos se quedaron a las afueras de la sala donde se realizaría la actividad. Al momento que Capriles Randonski llegó al lugar para iniciar el evento, él y su compañera se volvieron a acercar para intentar acceder al acto pero los funcionarios de seguridad no lo permitieron.
Según su testimonio, se generó una conglomeración de personas, entre efectivos de seguridad y simpatizantes del candidato presidencial. En ese momento los guardianes los empujaron y trataron de sacarlos del lugar. Agregó que a la reportera le intentaron quitar la cámara fotográfica y le propinaron un golpe en la cara. Luego de recibir un empujón, Campos pegó la cabeza contra la puerta de la sala donde se encontraban.
Dijo que a él, una persona -que no pudo identificar- lo golpeó en la espalda. El reportero detalló que las lesiones fueron leves.
Rangel manifestó que, luego de este incidente, lograron acceder a la sala por intermediación de simpatizantes del candidato presidencial que estaban en el sitio. Sin embargo, cuando se disponían a ubicarse, otros funcionarios de seguridad les pidieron que abandonaran el lugar.
Al momento de la conversación con IPYS Venezuela, el equipo reporteril no había presentado la denuncia sobre este incidente ante los órganos de justicia venezolanos.
Este hecho configura una violación a la libertad de expresión e información, debido a que se presentan hechos que colocan en riesgos la integridad de los periodistas, y prevalecen algunos obstáculos para que los equipos reporteriles desarrollen su labor de manera adecuada.

State-owned media reporter crew assaulted in an election campaign act
On April 3, 2013, the reporter crew of the Agencia Venezolana de Noticias (AVN), a state-owned digital information media -comprising Orlando Rangel, reporter and Zurimar Campos, graphic reporter- were physically assaulted by security officials of the Simón Bolívar campaign group, which backs Henrique Capriles Radonski, the candidate for presidential elections on April 14. This event took place during an act with the presidential candidate in Caracas, Capital district.
Orlando Rangel told IPYS Venezuela that when he arrived to the site of the activity with Capriles, a press crew member of the campaign group informed him that he could not enter to cover the activity because he had not been called. Rangel observed that other journalists from other public media were also forbidden access, whereas crews from private and international media were allowed to enter.
The reporter commented that in spite of this refusal, they remained outside the room where the activity would take place. When Capriles Radonski arrived to commence the event, he and his partner once again came close to attempt to enter but the security officers did not let them.
Based on his testimony, persons started to conglomerate, including security officers and supporters of the presidential candidate. At that moment, the guards started to push and tried to evict them from the premises. He added that someone tried to take the female reporter´s camera away from her and gave her a blow to her face. After being shoved around, Campos hit his head on the door to the room they were in.
He said that a person -he was not able to identify- hit him in the back, but stated that his injuries were mild.
Rangel stated that, after this incident, managed to enter the room thanks to the mediation of supporters of the presidential candidate who were there. However, when they were taking their positions, other security officers asked them to leave.
At the time of having this conversation with IPYS Venezuela, the reporter crew had pressed no charges due to this incident at the Venezuelan justice entities.
This is a breach to the freedom of expression and information, due to events that jeopardize the physical integrity of the journalists, and presents obstacles that hinder reporters from doing their jobs properly.
