El 4 de junio de 2013, el Presidente de la República Nicolás Maduro afirmó que el diario Últimas Noticias, periódico privado de circulación nacional, censura el Plan Patria Segura, un programa oficial que adelanta el gobierno nacional para atender la situación de inseguridad ciudadana en el país. Argumento que es “un veto” “vergonzoso”. Las declaraciones fueron ofrecidas en el marco de las actividades del Gobierno de calle, realizadas en la localidad de Catia La Mar del estado Vargas, en las adyacencias de Caracas.
En relación a la difusión mediática del Plan Patria Segura, Nicolás Maduro dijo: “ustedes ven a cobertura que le da un medio como Últimas Noticias realmente es vergonzoso. El plan de seguridad más importante que se ha puesto en marcha en el país, en los últimos 30 40 años, es ignorado vulgarmente” ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=HqLUsf7VJKk#t=108s).
El primer mandatario nacional criticó el titular de Últimas Noticias, de ese mismo día: “Plan Patria Segura la tiene difícil en Sucre”, municipio del estado Miranda, perteneciente a Caracas ( http://unfotos.ultimasnoticias.com.ve//un-04-06-2013-p%C3%A1gina-10-nacional.jpg).
La nota informativa acotaba que “Un total de 110 ciudadanos asesinados, 216 carros robados y 115 hurtados, además de 123 hurtos genéricos, registrados solamente durante las primeras ocho semanas de este año, situaron a Sucre como el municipio más violento del país, según las estadísticas que tiene la policía científica, las cuales están detalladas en el informe que elaboró el Observatorio de Seguridad Ciudadana del Ministerio de Justicia”.
En respuesta a las afirmaciones del Presidente, Eleazar Díaz Rangel, director de Últimas Noticias señaló: “No entendemos cómo se atreve a hacer tal afirmación”.
“Desde el 13 de mayo hasta ahora hemos publicado 23 páginas sobre el tema, la mayoría de las veces anunciados en nuestra primera página. Cualquier lectura de este diario permite llegar sin esfuerzo alguno a una conclusión muy distinta de las apreciaciones del Presidente. Estas declaraciones de la autoridad gubernamental se enmarcan en una serie de declaraciones oficiales que cuestionan la libertad informativa y critican las perspectivas con las que se plantean las noticias en distintos medios de comunicación privados. Caracas: President of the republic criticized alleged media veto against him
On June 4, 2013, Nicolás Maduro, the President of the republic, stated that the newspaper Últimas Noticias, a private newspaper that circulates nationwide, censors the Safe Homeland Plan (in Spanish, Plan Patria Segura), an official program spearheaded by the national government to attend to the situation of citizen insecurity in the nation. He argued that this is “an embarrassing veto”. The declaration was offered within the framework of the government´s street activities in Catia La Mar, Vargas state, in the outskirts of Caracas.
Regarding the media diffusion of the Plan Patria Segura, Nicolás Maduro said: “You see the coverage given by a media such as Últimas Noticias. It is really embarrassing. The most important safety plan set in motion in the country in the past 30 or 40 years and it is ignored in a most vulgar manner”. The info note mentioned that “A total of 110 citizens assassinated, 216 cars stolen and 115 illegally seized, apart from 123 generic thefts, registered during the first eight weeks of this year have made Sucre the most violent municipality of the nation according to the scientific police statistics as detailed in the report drafted by the Observatory of Citizen Security of the Ministry of Justice”.
In response to the president´s affirmations, Eleazar Díaz Rangel, director of Últimas Noticias, pointed out: “We do not understand how he can dare to make this statement”.
“From May 13 to date we have published 23 pages on this topic, most of which have been announced in our front pages. Anybody reading this newspaper can effortlessly arrive at a very different conclusion from the president´s appreciations. These statements by the government authority are part of a series of official declarations that question freedom of information and criticize the perspectives with which the news are posed in various private media.
