Mayor´s office official insulted a female reporter

On June 29, 2013, an official of the mayor´s office of Ezequiel Zamora municipality in Monagas state, verbally assaulted Yelitza Santana, a female reporter of the Periódico de Monagas, a private local newspaper. The journalist was covering an official event when the official yelled insults at her, in an intimidatory manner. This happened in Punta de Mata, the capital of Ezequiel Zamora municipality.

Santana told IPYS Venezuela that the official -whose identity is unknown- arrived at the local headquarters of the National Integrated Customs and Tax Administration Service (Seniat), an executive dependency, to run an errand on behalf of the mayor´s office. He consulted the female reporter on the procedures to be completed in that office, and since the journalist advised him to consult the office representatives directly, he insulted her.

The female reporter commented that the official berated her work and that of the newspaper she works for, resorting to political party-related insults.

Santana is an acting correspondent for the Periódico de Monagas in Punta de Mata -in the vicinity of the capital of that state-. She was in the premises covering the inauguration of the new Seniat offices in that locality.

The journalist added that police officers who were there, realized that this was taking place but did not react to the mayor´s office official´s assault against the journalist.
