El 14 de abril de 2013, durante la cobertura de las elecciones presidenciales, a Ana María Paz, reportera de la emisora Azul FM, medio radioeléctrico comunitario del Zulia, la detuvieron de manera arbitraria por más de una hora después de denunciar irregularidades durante el proceso de votación en un centro electoral de la localidad de Concepción, del municipio La Cañada de Urdaneta, en el estado Zulia.
Ana María Paz contó a IPYS Venezuela que a las 9:00 a.m. se acercó al centro electoral de la Unidad Educativa Roberto González, ubicado en la parroquia El Carmelo de La Cañada, y que después de varios minutos en cola, llegó a su mesa de votación, en uno de los salones de clase.
La reportera estaba acreditada por el Consejos Nacional Electoral para realizar la cobertura de prensa. Durante su espera, vio desde la puerta cómo una mujer vestida con franela roja -color alusivo a las fuerzas político-partidistas del oficialismo- asistía a un hombre joven durante la votación. “El hombre aparentaba unos 40 años y no tenía ninguna discapacidad visible”, describió Ana María. La reportera alertó que se trataba de un delito electoral, al tiempo que denunció que el parabán de cartón que evita la visibilidad al momento de votar, estaba cortado por la mitad, y hacía visible cualquier movimiento.
“Lo grité y se formó un problema en la mesa de votación. Todos gritaron y se inició una discusión. Luego llegó (funcionarios) del Plan República”, cuerpo militar del Estado encargado de la seguridad del proceso electoral.
Paz sacó su teléfono móvil e hizo una fotografía a la pieza de cartón reducida a una pequeña lámina. Cuando llegaron los militares, le decomisaron su equipo móvil y le pidieron votar en ese momento. Luego la sacaron del centro de votación y la llevaron a un vehículo de los cuerpos de seguridad. Más tarde la trasladaron a otro centro electoral del mismo municipio, donde estaba la máxima autoridad de la cuadrilla militar que la detuvo de manera arbitraria.
La reportera estuvo una hora detenida, hasta que uno de los militares le pidió borrar la fotografía. La amenazó con llevarla presa e iniciar un proceso por un delito electoral, pero minutos más tarde se retracto y le otorgaron la dejaron retirarse del lugar.

Zulia: journalist detained for denouncing a case of assisted voting
On April 14, 2013, during the covering of the presidential elections, Ana María Paz, a reporter of radio station La Universidad del Zulia (Luz FM) was arbitrarily detained for more than an hour after denouncing irregularities during the voting process in an election center of the La Cañada de Urdaneta municipality in Zulia state. This region is located in the western part of Venezuela.
Ana María Paz told IPYS Venezuela that at 9:00 a.m. she approached the elections center of the Roberto González School or education unit, located in El Carmelo de La Cañada parish, and after several minutes waiting in line, she got to her voting table in a classroom.
The reporter had her credentials of the National Elections Council allowing her to cover the event. While she was waiting, she saw from the door how a woman dressed in a red T-shirt -the color of the official political party- was assisting a young man and helping him to vote. “The man appeared to be about 40 years old and had no visible impairment”, Ana María described. The reporter alerted of this election felony and denounced that the cardboard screen that shields the voting machine was cut in half and all the movement during the voting process was completely visible.
“I yelled out about it and a problem started up at the voting table. Everyone started yelling and a discussion ensued. Then officials of the Plan República (a military state corps in charge of safeguarding the election process) arrived”.
Paz pulled out her mobile phone and took a photograph of the reduced size of the cardboard screen. When the military men arrived, they took away her mobile equipment and they asked her to vote at that moment. They then forcibly led her out of the voting center and took her to a vehicle of the security corps. They later took her to another election center in the same municipality -the seat of the maximum military authority- where she was arbitrarily detained.
The reporter was detained for an hour until one of the military men asked her to erase the photograph. He threatened to arrest her and start proceedings based on an election felony but minutes later he recanted and she was allowed to leave the premises.
